There’s a first for everything! Quarantine life has given my husband and I a new project to do with Emery, trying to grow seedlings in egg cartons! I do not have the greatest green thumb, but I’m trying to learn more and keep things alive! This is a great project to do with kids that teaches them how vegetables/herbs grow and now that it’s spring, it’s the perfect time to give it a go! Once our seeds grow into seedlings (hopefully!) , we will transfer them outside in pots or an outdoor garden!
Seeds we’re using:
- carrots
- basil
- parsley
- cucumbers
- romaine lettuce
- green beans
- sweet corn
Note: Before planting the seeds in the egg carton, verify when and how long it takes for your vegetable or herbs to grow and when to transfer them outside depending on where you live
Materials You Need
- Seeds
- Potting Soil
- Cardboard Egg Cartons
- Scrissors
- Spray bottle / watering can
- Garden Trowel or Spoon
- Painters Tape (if needed for a label)
- pen / permanent marker
Steps:
- Cut the egg carton in half
- Add potting soil into each individial egg carton cup
- Poke a hole in each egg carton cup (easy to do with your finger)
- Place seed(s) in each hole. (We placed at least 3-4 seeds in each hole because we aren’t sure what seeds will take or grow – hedging our bets one of them will)
- Label your rows of seeds with the name of the vegetable / herb
- Spray the soil with water
- Put your egg cartons on a tray and take indoors, make sure the egg cartons are in a warm light-filled room
- Water your seeds everyday
- Once the seeds have sprouted into seedlings, you can transfer them outdoors, making sure the egg cartons are very saturated and wet before transferring them
- Dig a hole in the container or ground that you are moving them too
- Tear off one of the egg carton cups and place into the soil, the egg carton cup will decompose in the ground
- Water your seedlings everyday to help them grow!
